What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a holistic system of healthcare founded over 200 years ago by the German physician Samuel Hahnemann. It is based on the principle that the body has an innate capacity to heal itself, and that carefully selected natural substances can stimulate this self-healing response. Homeopathy works with the individual as a whole — mind, emotions, and physical symptoms — rather than focusing on isolated diseases or diagnoses.

At the heart of homeopathy is the principle known as similia similibus curentur — “like is cured by like.” This means that a substance capable of producing symptoms in a healthy person can, when prepared homeopathically and given in the smallest possible dose, help relieve similar symptoms in someone who is unwell. This principle is set out clearly by Hahnemann in the Organon of Medicine, particularly in Aphorisms 3, 26, and 27, which form the philosophical foundation of homeopathic practice.

Homeopathy does not treat named diseases. Instead, it focuses on the totality of symptoms — the unique pattern of physical sensations, emotional responses, triggers, and modalities experienced by the individual. Two people with the same medical diagnosis may receive completely different homeopathic remedies, because their symptom expressions, constitution, and life experiences differ. This individualisation is one of the defining characteristics of classical homeopathy and is emphasised throughout the Organon.

Homeopathic remedies are prepared through a specific process of dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), which transforms the original substance into a potent energetic medicine while removing material toxicity.
Hahnemann describes this process in detail in Aphorisms 269–271 of the Organon, explaining that the medicinal power of a substance is released and enhanced through this method, rather than through chemical concentration.

Importantly, homeopathy is a system of observation and experience. Its remedies have been tested through provings — structured trials where healthy individuals record the symptoms produced by a substance — creating detailed remedy pictures that are still used today. This methodical approach, combined with over two centuries of clinical use and documentation, forms the basis of homeopathic knowledge as taught and practiced worldwide.

Today, homeopathy is used by millions of people globally and continues to be practiced according to the same principles laid down by Hahnemann. While modern applications and clinical experience have expanded the materia medica, the core philosophy remains unchanged: treat the person, not the disease; stimulate the body’s own healing intelligence; and prescribe based on the individual’s unique expression of imbalance.
