What Is Homeopathy? Understanding the Whole-Person Approach

When I began formally studying homeopathy with the goal of becoming a certified practitioner, one of the first questions friends would ask me was, “But what exactly is homeopathy?”

This is the first in a series of articles where I’ll break down this fascinating and deeply effective method of healing.

A Whole-Person Approach to Health

Plato once said, “The part can never be well unless the whole is well.”

Although best known as a philosopher, Plato also had a profound understanding of the human body and the way all its systems connect. Long before the term holistic health became popular, he recognised that true wellbeing involves the mind, body, and emotions working in harmony.

Centuries later, in the late 1700s, a German physician developed the system we now know as homeopathy. He studied the writings of many great healers before him and built a medical approach that considers every aspect of a person’s health, not just isolated symptoms.

Looking at the Full Picture

In homeopathy, every symptom matters—whether physical, mental, or emotional. Even with something that seems simple, like a sore throat and fever, a homeopath won’t just note the temperature or the location of the pain. They’ll also ask about:

  • Your energy levels (restless or exhausted?)
  • Your appetite (hungry or no interest in food?)
  • Your thirst (drinking more or less than usual?)
  • Your mood (irritable, anxious, or low?)

Each detail helps create a full picture of your current state of health. This “symptom picture” guides the choice of a remedy that supports the body in returning to balance.

Why It’s Never Just One Thing

You might have experienced times when illness feels like it affects your entire being. Maybe when you’re unwell, you also feel emotionally low, or when you’re stressed, headaches set in. These patterns show how interconnected the body truly is.

Homeopathy views illness as a disruption of the whole system. Because everything in the body is linked, genuine recovery happens when the underlying imbalance is addressed—not just the surface symptoms.

Homeopathy sees you as more than your illness. By treating the whole person, it aims to restore balance and support lasting health.

What is homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine that treats the whole person — mind, body, and emotions — rather than just isolated symptoms. Remedies are chosen based on the full picture of an individual’s health.
How is homeopathy different from conventional medicine?
Conventional medicine often focuses on suppressing specific symptoms, while homeopathy looks for the underlying imbalance causing them. A homeopath considers physical, emotional, and mental details to select a remedy that helps restore balance.
Who developed homeopathy?
Homeopathy was developed in the late 1700s by a German physician, who drew on earlier medical traditions and created a system based on treating the whole person rather than just the disease.
Why does homeopathy consider emotional and mental symptoms as well as physical ones?
Homeopathy recognises that the body, mind, and emotions are interconnected. For example, stress can trigger headaches, or illness can affect mood. By considering all aspects, homeopathy supports genuine, lasting recovery.
How does a homeopath choose a remedy?
A homeopath asks detailed questions about symptoms such as energy, appetite, thirst, and mood. These details form a “symptom picture” that guides the choice of the most suitable remedy for the individual.
