Understanding the Connection Between Trauma and ADHD: A Homeopathic Perspective

In his book Emotional Healing with Homeopathy: Treating the Effects of Trauma, Peter Chappell observes that “homeopathic medicine now offers an almost complete set of remedies to address the psychophysical effects of trauma and the ego patterns that arise from it.”

In homeopathy, we look beyond the surface of a diagnosis to explore the emotional wounds a person has experienced and how those events have shaped their health. Many of us bury emotions such as fear, anger, grief, and loss, believing it will help us cope. Yet, unresolved feelings can contribute to illness. When those emotions are released, true healing can begin.

As Chappell notes, “A homeopathic consultation often pinpoints the very heart of the trauma or drama that has shaped a life.”

How Are ADHD and Trauma Linked?

Some researchers suggest that the signs of childhood trauma can easily be mistaken for ADHD, making misdiagnosis a real concern. This is because the two share many overlapping symptoms.

A report warns that misdiagnosis can have serious consequences. If a child who has experienced trauma is mistakenly diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed unnecessary medication, the underlying emotional wounds remain unaddressed. Past or ongoing abuse may go unnoticed, affecting the child’s ability to connect with others and increasing the risk of long-term emotional and mental health issues (McMillen et al., 2005).

While stimulant medications can help some people with ADHD by boosting certain brain chemicals related to focus, movement, and pleasure, they can also cause problems for a child already struggling with PTSD or anxiety. For a child who is already hyper-alert, these medications may heighten feelings of agitation.

Without the right care, a child with ADHD can face school difficulties, depression, behavioural challenges, troubled relationships, and even substance misuse. Likewise, unaddressed trauma can alter brain structure, affect the nervous system, disrupt emotional balance, and reduce the ability to cope with everyday stress.

This is why conventional practitioners stress the importance of distinguishing between ADHD and trauma before deciding on a treatment approach.

For homeopaths, this separation is less of a challenge. We see the individual as a whole—every symptom, trait, and root cause is interconnected.

Could Trauma and ACEs Contribute to ADHD?

Dr Gabor Maté, who specialises in childhood development and trauma, believes that ADHD often has roots in family stress—both internal and external. He notes that existing research supports this, even if not all scientists agree on the conclusion.

Paediatrician Dr Nicola Brown from the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore proposed that inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness could mirror the impact of childhood adversity. Her study, Associations Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and ADHD Diagnosis and Severity, revealed that children diagnosed with ADHD had far higher exposure to challenges such as poverty, divorce, domestic violence, and parental substance misuse. In fact, children who had lived through four or more adverse experiences were three times more likely to be on ADHD medication.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can include:

  • Neglect or abandonment
  • Death of a loved one
  • Physical, verbal, or sexual abuse
  • Emotional neglect
  • Natural disasters
  • Parental mental illness, depression, or incarceration

Maté cites research from his book Scattered Minds showing that families of ADHD children are three times more likely to go through separation or divorce, and mothers often report higher levels of depression and marital strain.

Despite this evidence, conventional medicine still generally views ADHD as genetic, acknowledging that while family stress can worsen symptoms, it is not seen as a primary cause.

Conventional Care vs. the Homeopathic Approach

There’s no brain scan or genetic test that can conclusively diagnose ADHD. Conventional diagnosis depends on a clinician’s ability to follow detailed guidelines, observe behaviours, and collect reports from parents and teachers. However, time pressures—often limited to 15–30 minute appointments—make in-depth exploration challenging.

Homeopathy offers a different experience. Appointments typically last 60–90 minutes, allowing the practitioner to gain a detailed understanding of the child’s personality, history, and emotional world. We consider past trauma, patterns of loss or rejection, feelings of fear or resentment, and many other subtle influences. This comprehensive view helps us see the bigger picture of the child’s health.

While conventional treatment often focuses on controlling physical symptoms with medication—sometimes leaving the deeper emotional cause untouched—homeopathic remedies aim to stimulate the body’s natural ability to release and resolve the inner trauma itself. As Chappell explains, remedies “mimic” these traumas, prompting the system to unlock and heal them.

Moving Forward Without Blame

If you’re only now considering the link between ADHD and ACEs, you might wonder, “Am I, or are we as parents, to blame?” Gabor Maté, who himself has ADHD and is a father to three children with the same diagnosis, is clear: “Judgement and blame are not the point. Understanding is.”

We cannot rewrite the past or erase its challenges, but we can address the hurt and restore balance. Healing is always possible.

How are ADHD and trauma connected?
ADHD and childhood trauma share many overlapping symptoms, such as hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. This can sometimes lead to misdiagnosis, leaving underlying emotional wounds unaddressed.
Can trauma increase the r
Yes. Research shows that children exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—such as neglect, abuse, divorce, or parental mental illness—are more likely to develop ADHD symptoms and require medication.
Why is it important to distinguish between ADHD and trauma?
If trauma is mistaken for ADHD, stimulant medications may worsen agitation in already hyper-alert children. More importantly, the deeper emotional wounds remain untreated, increasing the risk of long-term mental health challenges.
How does the homeopathic approach differ from conventional care?
Conventional care often focuses on managing symptoms with medication after short consultations. Homeopathy takes a holistic view, exploring the child’s history, emotions, and trauma in depth over longer consultations. Remedies are chosen to address the whole person, not just the behaviour.
What role do parents play in healing ADHD linked with trauma?
Parents are not to blame for trauma or stressors that may influence ADHD. As Dr Gabor Maté emphasises, “Understanding is the point, not judgement.” With support, both child and family can move forward, heal past wounds, and build resilience.
