Understanding Prolactin and How Homeopathy Can Help

What is Prolactin?
Prolactin, sometimes called luteotropic hormone or luteotropin, is a protein present in both men and women.
It is mainly produced by the pituitary gland — a small hormone-producing gland located at the base of the brain. While prolactin supports many functions in the body such as reproduction, immunity, blood cell production, and ovulation, it is most well known for encouraging breast milk production after childbirth. It also plays a role in naturally delaying pregnancy while a mother is breastfeeding.
One of its key functions is to reduce the levels of LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone), which are necessary for the ovaries to mature and release eggs.
When prolactin levels are too high — a condition called hyperprolactinemia — ovulation is suppressed, which can lead to difficulties conceiving.
Possible Symptoms of High Prolactin
- Unwanted breast milk production
- Low oestrogen levels in women
- Low testosterone levels in men
- Lack of ovulation
- Missed periods (amenorrhoea)
- Irregular cycles (oligomenorrhoea)
- Fertility challenges
- Reduced sex drive
- Vaginal dryness
- Excess hair growth (hirsutism)
Common Causes of Hyperprolactinemia
- Non-cancerous growth in the pituitary gland (prolactinoma)
- Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- High oestrogen levels, whether naturally occurring or from birth control pills
- Certain medications, including antidepressants and antipsychotics
- Low blood sugar
- Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa
- Stress
Ways to Naturally Lower Prolactin Levels
- Limit or avoid alcohol, especially beer, as barley can stimulate prolactin.
- Address and treat thyroid imbalances.
- Manage stress with practices like yoga, meditation, and slow, relaxing walks.
- Include vitamin B6-rich foods such as bananas, spinach, potatoes, chicken, and wild salmon in your diet.
- Avoid overly intense workouts that put excess strain on your body.
- Ensure you get 7–8 hours of restorative sleep each night.
- Consider homeopathic care to address underlying causes gently and effectively.
