Understanding Constitutional Prescribing in Homeopath

If you’ve ever explored true classical homeopathy, you’ve probably heard the phrase “constitutional prescribing” mentioned many times. For those used to conventional medical care from their GP, the idea may sound completely unfamiliar.
Homeopathy is a holistic form of medicine that considers every aspect of a person’s health—physical, mental, and emotional—particularly in the treatment of long-term conditions.
What Is Constitutional Prescribing?
A constitutional remedy is chosen to address a person’s health on all levels—physical, emotional, and mental. The right prescription can have a deep, lasting impact on the body’s natural defence system (immune system), helping it restore balance even during times of stress, fatigue, pain, or emotional upset.
This approach strengthens the body’s vital force, unlocking resources it couldn’t access before—whether that’s emotional resilience, improved memory, better nutrient utilisation, or nervous system balance.
What to Expect in a Consultation
A homeopathic consultation for constitutional prescribing goes far beyond looking at physical complaints. The practitioner will explore:
- Mental and emotional patterns – including fears, anxieties, and temperament.
- Reactions to external factors – for example, whether symptoms worsen in certain weather.
- Food likes and dislikes – cravings and aversions can be important indicators.
- Sleep habits – position, quality of rest, and how you feel on waking.
- Physical build and characteristics – body shape, hair and eye colour, and other defining traits.
Examples of Symptom Indicators
Emotional Clues:
- Short-tempered or easily angered → Nux vomica
- Symptoms triggered by damp or cold weather → Dulcamara
Food Preferences:
- Strong craving for sweets → Argentum nitricum or Sulphur
- Desire for sour flavours or vinegar → Sepia
Sleep Patterns:
- Sleeping on the back → Pulsatilla
- Feeling worse upon waking → Lachesis
Build and Appearance:
- Stocky, solid frame → Calcarea carbonica
- Tall and fine-boned → Silicea
How the Remedy Works
Once all relevant symptoms and traits are gathered, the homeopath matches them to the most fitting remedy profile. This chosen medicine becomes the constitutional remedy.
When prescribed correctly, it can bring about a noticeable improvement in overall wellbeing. If health dips again—due to stress, illness, or emotional upheaval—the same remedy can help the body rebalance more quickly, restoring mood, energy, and resilience.

The Bigger Picture
