Starting Your Homeopathy Journey – Why Arnica is a Great First Remedy

This first blog post was inspired by a question on the Ask a Homeopath Facebook group.

A newcomer to homeopathy asked:

“Where should I begin?”

“What are some essential remedies to keep at home?”

“Which resources are best for learning more?”

A great place to start is with Arnica. Many people have heard of Arnica—whether as a remedy or in the form of a cream or gel—commonly used for bruises, sprains, and general muscle strain. In its homeopathic form, Arnica 30C (I’ll explain the “30C” in another post) is my go-to suggestion for every first aid kit. I always keep a small spray bottle of it in my bag.

What is Arnica Montana?

Arnica Montana is a yellow, daisy-like flower that grows in alpine regions, particularly in Central Europe. For centuries, Swiss mountaineers have valued it, chewing the leaves to ease sore muscles and fatigue after strenuous climbs.

Even mountain goats seem to know its worth—they have been observed seeking out Arnica to chew after falls or injuries. These natural observations give us insight into how the homeopathic remedy works.

How Arnica Can Help

Homeopathic Arnica is widely used to ease shock, reduce pain, lessen swelling, and encourage the body’s natural healing process. It is particularly useful for significant soft tissue injuries.

Here are some situations where Arnica may be considered:

  • Broken Bones & Fractures – Helps reduce swelling, ease bruising, control internal bleeding, and address shock (other remedies may be added to assist bone healing).
  • Bruising – Useful for tissue damage caused by trauma, falls, or accidents. Also valuable for head injuries.
  • Cuts & Wounds – Helps with the initial shock, minimises swelling, and supports clotting.
  • Eye Injuries – Can be used after blunt trauma or knocks to the eye.
  • Jet Lag – Helpful when you feel battered and sore after long flights.
  • Labour – Supports both mother and baby before, during, and after childbirth by easing the physical and emotional strain. If the mother takes Arnica, the benefits can pass to the baby through breastfeeding.
  • Overexertion – Eases muscle soreness from strenuous activity, whether it’s a day of gardening or an intense workout.
  • Shock – Addresses both the emotional and physical impact after an accident or injury.
  • Sprains & Strains – Reduces swelling, controls bleeding, eases bruising, and helps with shock.
  • Surgery – Supports recovery after medical or dental procedures by minimising bleeding, swelling, and discomfort.

Arnica’s use is supported by over 200 years of clinical experience in homeopathy.
