Soothing a Crying Baby – How Homeopathy Can Help

I recently came across a wonderful piece by Linlee Jordan that offers practical tips for comforting a distressed baby, along with guidance on when it’s best to seek medical advice or speak to your homeopath.

One of the great advantages of homeopathy is that it allows us to gently support both babies and their parents during challenging times. You don’t have to simply “wait for them to grow out of it” if your baby is unsettled, nothing seems to work, and you’re exhausted.

Why Do Babies Cry?

Crying is a baby’s way of telling us something isn’t quite right. They may be tired, hungry, wet, uncomfortable, frightened, or in pain.

When choosing the most suitable remedy for a baby, I pay close attention to what’s happening in the moment — how they move, how they interact, what position they seem most comfortable in — as well as their story from pregnancy and birth up until now.

Choosing the Right Remedy

Even tiny babies show their discomfort in different ways, and those unique signs help guide the remedy choice.

  • Pulsatilla – For babies who are tearful, clingy, and want gentle cuddles. They often settle when carried in fresh, cool air.
  • Chamomilla – For those who seem angry, cry in pain, and can’t be comforted. They might want to be held but then push away, or seem to want to feed but refuse once offered.
  • Colocynthis – For infants who draw their knees up to the chest or feel better when firm pressure is applied to their tummy, perhaps lying face-down over your arm or shoulder.
  • Magnesia Phosphorica – For cramping pains eased by warmth and gentle pressure. Also useful for menstrual cramps in older children or teens.
  • Dioscorea – For babies who arch their back and stiffen rather than curling up.
  • Nux Vomica – For windy, irritable babies struggling to pass gas, burp, or have a bowel movement, especially if they’ve been affected by medications such as antibiotics or pain relief given around birth.

Of course, every baby is unique, so the best remedy will always be based on their individual symptoms.

Supporting Parents Too

It’s not just the baby who may need help — tired, sleep-deprived, and anxious parents also benefit from remedies to help them cope and recover.

Homeopathy offers a gentle, individualised way to bring relief to the whole family during these difficult times.

Why do babies cry so much?
Crying is your baby’s way of communicating discomfort, whether from hunger, tiredness, pain, fear, or simply wanting comfort.
How can homeopathy help a distressed baby?
Homeopathy looks at the baby’s unique behaviour, movements, and comfort cues to select a remedy that gently supports their wellbeing.
What are some common homeopathic remedies for unsettled babies?
Pulsatilla (clingy, tearful babies), Chamomilla (angry, inconsolable crying), Colocynthis (better with tummy pressure), Magnesia Phosphorica (cramping eased by warmth), Dioscorea (arching back), and Nux Vomica (windy, irritable).
