Irritable Bowel Syndrome – Can Homeopathy Help?

What is IBS?

It is Irritable Bowel Syndrome which is a very commonly diagnosed condition that affects the digestive system. It is about a problem in the colon, our large intestine.

It causes symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time. People often get told it is a lifelong problem. It can be very frustrating to live with and can have a big impact on your everyday life.

What do we understand about having IBS?

Either the food is passing too quickly due to the overly strong muscular contractions to push the food through, or the muscular contractions are too weak. When these muscular contractions are far too strong, the food gets rushed through and we exhibit symptoms of diarrhoea and when they are too weak, we will get constipated. Another reason may be that our nerves are over-sensitive in the area making even a slight presence of gas painful for you. There is some problem in the communications between the nerves and the brain. Sometimes, the doctors may say it is due to gastroenteritis (which simply means inflammation in your gastro area, your digestive tract). You are often told a family history of IBS is a regular cause and finally, what the Homeopath would say is the most important reason, it may all be happening because of your levels of stress.

Sometimes, people get diagnosed with IBS after an event of food poisoning and may say that since then they have never been able to get rid of the diarrhoea. We have 100 trillion micro-organisms in our gut which include bacteria and viruses. When their numbers are correct for us, we are fine, when there is a change, we start getting various IBS type symptoms.

The problem for the mainstream doctor is that they cannot find anything physically wrong with you, there are no pathological changes. Our mainstream medical world will primarily recommend diet changes and offer medication to control the diarrhoea and constipation. These days they also acknowledge stress as a factor and will identify this to you which is very important. The complementary world of medicine has been talking about the close relationship of the mind and your gut for hundreds of years; I am pleased to note the mainstream medical world is finally acknowledging this. It is now a known idea referred to as the ‘mind gut health’.

I was diagnosed with IBS as a young woman in my early 20s. I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy and an ultra sound over my ovaries and uterus and I was told nothing wrong has been found, But there was something wrong. I was suffering, I had pain but I was being told there is nothing wrong. Out of desperation, I started looking around for something else to help me. I found Homeopathy and it was the best thing I ever did for me! My Homeopathic plan was heavily based on my mental and emotional feelings, and I am pleased to report after a short while I was having a much better quality of life without having to take any pharmaceutical medicines to ease my IBS symptoms.

IBS cases are typically where Homeopathy is at its best. The Homeopath will take your case noting your mental, emotional and physical symptoms and then make a holistic Homeopathic plan for you. We do not treat the label of IBS, but we will account for the symptoms you are having and then recommend Homeopathic remedies to ease your discomfort. When I have IBS clients, I will make a two-way approach – I will give them some Homeopathic remedies to help with immediate relief for the digestive symptoms, and I will also start them on Constitutional Homeopathy where we endeavour to resolve the problem from a deeper level. The best solutions are always when the body can be triggered to resolve the problem itself – this is Homeopathy!

So, to answer the question, can Homeopathy help IBS, the answer is YES it is worth a try! It most certainly helped me.

What is IBS and what are the main symptoms?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common digestive condition affecting the colon (large intestine). It causes symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, or a mix of both. These symptoms often come and go, sometimes lasting for days, weeks or even months, and can seriously affect everyday life.
What causes IBS to develop or flare up?
IBS is linked to how the muscles of the bowel contract and how sensitive the gut nerves are. If contractions are too strong, food moves too quickly and causes diarrhoea; if too weak, constipation appears. Over-sensitive nerves, past infections like food poisoning, changes in gut microbes, family tendency and, very importantly, stress can all play a role.
Why do tests for IBS often come back ‘normal’?
In IBS there are usually no visible structural changes in the gut, so tests such as endoscopy, colonoscopy and scans often show “nothing wrong”. Even though results are normal, people still experience real pain, cramps and bowel changes. IBS is more about how the gut functions and responds than about obvious damage.
How is IBS usually treated in mainstream medicine?
Doctors commonly suggest diet changes, fibre adjustments and medicines to control diarrhoea, constipation or cramps. They now also recognise the link between stress, emotions and digestion, sometimes called “mind–gut health”. However, many people still feel their symptoms are only being managed, not truly resolved.
How can homeopathy help IBS?
In homeopathy for IBS, a practitioner looks at your physical, mental and emotional picture, not just the label. They may give remedies for immediate relief of cramping, bloating or bowel changes, alongside constitutional remedies aimed at deeper balance, especially around stress and emotional triggers. This two-way approach helped the author move from daily suffering to a much better quality of life without relying on long-term pharmaceutical medication.
