Homeopathy for Dogs: Gentle, Natural Care for Your Canine Companion

Homeopathy is a gentle, natural form of medicine that can be used safely at home to support your dog’s health and wellbeing.
The key to using homeopathy effectively with animals is learning to observe closely—what’s different about your dog? How is he reacting? What is she experiencing?
Getting to Know Your Dog
With people, it’s easy to ask, “What am I feeling? What’s bothering me? What’s the real problem here?” With dogs, it’s not quite the same—but if you know your pet well, you can pick up on subtle changes.
You might notice she’ll try to push your buttons but never dares with your partner. Or that he’s wary of the postman but melts into Auntie Molly’s arms. You know how he reacts to the neighbour’s dog, which food he prefers with a little gravy, or how she needs the curtains closed when the scouts march past because their high-pitched calls upset her.
These quirks—unique to each dog—are important in homeopathy. Your interpretation of your dog’s personality, or “canine-ality”, is one of the deciding factors in selecting the right remedy.
How Homeopathy Works for Dogs
When you target the root cause of a symptom, you help stimulate your dog’s natural vitality—what some call energy, spirit, or life force. This spark is what drives recovery. Often, the first change you notice after giving a remedy is a boost in energy, followed by gradual improvement in symptoms.
Just like with people, each dog responds differently. This is truly personalised medicine—tailored to the unique needs of the individual.
Three Golden Rules for Prescribing
- Observe carefully – Every individual trait matters.
- See the whole picture – All symptoms are connected; treat the dog as a complete being, not just one isolated complaint.
- Support basic needs – A proper diet, regular exercise, and a healthy environment are essential.
With the right remedy, homeopathy encourages the body to begin healing from within, addressing the underlying cause rather than simply masking the symptom.
Why Homeopathy Can Offer Long-Term Benefits
Homeopathy aims to restore balance at a deep level. Physical symptoms are the body’s way of signalling that something isn’t right. By addressing the root cause, you can achieve long-term improvement.
You may first notice more vitality, then a shift in how your dog reacts to daily events, and finally, the lessening of physical symptoms.
First Aid Remedies for Dogs
For most injuries and wounds, remedies are chosen based on visible symptoms. Often, several remedies may be possible, so gathering detailed observations is key. Here are some commonly used first aid remedies for dogs:
- Aconite – For shock or trauma of sudden onset (e.g., after fright or injury). Potency: 200C or 1M. One dose.
- Apis Mellifica – For swelling, redness, heat, puffiness, or stinging pain; helpful for allergic swelling or insect bites. Potency: 12C or 30C. One dose, repeat in 2 hours if needed.
- Arnica – For bruising or soreness. Can be taken internally or applied externally (unbroken skin only). Potency: 30C. One dose, three times daily for 3 days.
- Calendula – Speeds healing of wounds, cuts, grazes, and abrasions. Can be used internally or as a wash. Potency: 30C. One dose, three times daily for 3 days.
- Hepar Sulph – For infected wounds with smelly pus; followed by Silica to finish clearing infection. Potency: 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Hypericum – For nerve injuries, crushed or trapped areas, or puncture wounds from splinters or barbed wire. Potency: 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Ledum – For puncture wounds of any kind. Potency: 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Silica – Helps expel foreign bodies, heal abscesses, and support scar healing; follows Hepar Sulph well. Potency: 12C or 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Staphysagria – For cuts, lacerations, or wounds after surgery; also for eye injuries. Potency: 12C or 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Urtica Urens – For bee stings, nettle rash, or hives. Potency: 12C or 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
- Myristica – For pus-filled sacs, especially anal sac infections. Potency: 12C or 30C. One dose twice daily for 3 days.
