Homeopathy and Influenza – Lessons from History

“When a skilled homeopath is consulted within the first 24 hours of flu symptoms, pneumonia rarely develops.”
– S.H. Grimmer, M.D., Chicago, Illinois
For more than two centuries, homeopathy has played an important role in helping people through epidemics and pandemics. In many historical records, homeopathic care achieved better outcomes in preventing serious illness and reducing mortality than conventional medicine of the time.
One of the key strengths of homeopathy is its ability to be prescribed quickly and accurately, based on the unique symptoms presented by each patient.
Could Homeopathy Help in a Modern Influenza Pandemic?
This question has often been raised — if another deadly flu strain were to sweep the globe, could homeopathy still make a difference in today’s high-tech medical era? To explore this, we can look back to one of the most devastating pandemics in history — the Spanish Flu of 1918 — and see how homeopathy performed.
During that time, homeopathic physicians around the world documented remarkable recovery rates compared to conventional approaches. Here are some accounts reported to the American Institute of Homeopathy in 1920:
- Dr. T.A. McCann, Dayton, Ohio, reported: 24,000 cases treated conventionally had a mortality rate of 28.2%, while 26,000 homeopathically treated cases had a mortality rate of just 1.05%.
- Frank Wieland, M.D., Chicago, Illinois: In a factory of 8,000 workers, there was only one death. Gelsemium was the main remedy used. No aspirin, no vaccines.
- Burton Haseltine, M.D., Chicago, Illinois: Noted that avoiding heavy drugging was key to their success.
- Dudley A. Williams, M.D., Providence, R.I.: No influenza deaths in his care, and just a 2.1% mortality rate in pneumonia cases.
- Cora Smith King, M.D., Washington, D.C.: Treated 350 cases, with only one death — a neglected pneumonia case who had taken extremely high doses of aspirin before arriving.
- Laura A. Hurd, M.D., San Francisco, California: In Hahnemann Hospital, homeopathic remedies brought curative results, not just temporary relief.
- R.S. Faris, M.D., Richmond, Virginia: Treated 618 patients with only 5 deaths, 3 of whom had prior conventional treatment.
- W.H. Wilson, M.D., Chicago, Illinois: In a military camp where the mortality rate was 20%, homeopathic care reduced deaths to under 3%.
These practitioners consistently noted that avoiding large doses of aspirin — which were widely used at the time — was critical, long before the dangers of aspirin in viral illness and its link to Reye’s syndrome were understood.
The Homeopathic Approach
One of the reasons homeopathy succeeded during this pandemic was that practitioners did not need a confirmed disease name before beginning treatment. Instead, they took careful case notes, matched the patient’s individual symptoms to the most appropriate remedy, and let the body’s immune system respond with support from the remedy.
This flexibility allowed quick, tailored prescribing that proved lifesaving — and it’s why many homeopaths today remain confident that the same principles could be applied if a severe influenza outbreak were to occur again.
Ongoing Work in the Present
Today, homeopaths worldwide continue to collaborate on identifying the most useful remedies and potential prophylactic options for current and emerging viruses. The aim remains the same as it was in 1918: to act swiftly, adapt treatment to the symptoms presented, and strengthen the body’s natural healing response.
A Long History of Homeoprophylaxis
The use of homeopathy for prevention goes back to the early 1800s. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, the founder of homeopathy, first recognised its potential for epidemic prevention in 1801, when he used Belladonna to successfully protect against scarlet fever.
Since then, homeopathic methods have been used in various outbreaks — from polio and influenza to meningitis, dengue, and leptospirosis. This long record highlights the adaptability of homeopathy across different infectious diseases.
