Homeopathic Remedies for Morning Sickness

You are so excited! You are expecting a baby and then the nausea hits. Often, at least in my clan, it’s the first sign that you are pregnant.

My sister recently announced that she was expecting another child. She couldn’t wait to tell all the relatives because the nausea and throwing up she was experiencing was nasty and she wanted some homeopathic remedies.

Morning sickness during pregnancy is a common issue, and homeopathic remedies can be used to help alleviate symptoms.

Commonly used homeopathic remedies for nausea during pregnancy

Here are some commonly used homeopathic remedies for morning sickness, each suited for different sets of symptoms:

Nux Vomica

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea, vomiting, irritability, and indigestion. It’s useful if the nausea is worse in the morning and accompanied by a feeling of heaviness or discomfort in the stomach. Consider this remedy if the nausea is triggered by food odors.
  • Ideal for: Women who are sensitive, stressed, have a tendency to overeat or have digestive disturbances.

Sepia

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea, vomiting, and a general feeling of weakness or exhaustion. It’s often used for women who feel emotionally drained, may have an aversion to food, or feel a sense of sadness or indifference.
  • Ideal for: Those who are feeling emotionally overwhelmed or detached, especially if morning sickness worsens with emotional stress.

Ipecacuanha (Ipecac)

  • Symptoms it helps with: Persistent nausea and vomiting that doesn’t seem to improve with food or drink. It’s useful when the vomiting is continuous and doesn’t provide any relief.
  • Ideal for: Women who have constant nausea and may even feel nauseated from the smell or thought of food.

Phosphorus

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea with a feeling of emptiness in the stomach, and a craving for cold drinks or fresh air. It can also help with excessive salivation and nausea that’s aggravated by strong smells or heat.
  • Ideal for: Women who feel weak, faint, or excessively thirsty during their morning sickness.

Cocculus Indicus

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea due to motion, dizziness, or lack of sleep. If the morning sickness is worsened by fatigue, or if the woman feels lightheaded and faint, Cocculus can be very beneficial.
  • Ideal for: Women who feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and experience nausea that gets worse when they move or when they haven’t had enough rest.

Arsenicum Album

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea and vomiting that occur along with a sense of anxiety, restlessness, and a fear of being sick. It’s also good for those who feel weak, chilly, and want to be left alone.
  • Ideal for: Women who experience anxiety alongside their nausea and have a tendency to feel very chilly and exhausted.

Lycopodium

  • Symptoms it helps with: Nausea that is typically worse in the late afternoon or evening. It’s helpful when the nausea is accompanied by bloating, constipation, or indigestion.
  • Ideal for: Women who have digestive issues (e.g., gas, bloating), a lack of appetite, or who feel generally weak and irritable.

Choosing a Remedy

Back to my sister, we gathered her symptoms using CLAMS.

But she still wasn’t sure, as her morning sickness was different from her last pregnancy. In the end, my sister was given a dose of her constitutional remedy (which also happens to be Nux Vomica) and the morning sickness subsided. Now when she feels the nausea coming now, she simply takes a dose of Nux vomica and the morning sickness goes away.

Homeopathy saved the day again!

Reminder: Homeopathic remedies are chosen based on the individual’s specific symptoms, physical state, and emotional condition.

It is an individualized medicine. What worked for my sister, may not work for you.

What are the most common remedies in homeopathy for morning sickness?
The blog post lists seven key remedies tailored to specific symptoms: Nux Vomica, Sepia, Ipecacuanha (Ipecac), Phosphorus, Cocculus Indicus, Arsenicum Album, and Lycopodium. Each targets different triggers, such as food odors, motion, or emotional stress.
Which remedy is best for constant nausea that doesn't improve after vomiting?
Ipecacuanha (Ipecac) is ideal for persistent nausea and vomiting that offers no relief. It is particularly useful for women whose nausea is continuous and who may feel sick just from the smell or thought of food.
Is there a homeopathic remedy for morning sickness caused by motion or fatigue?
Yes, Cocculus Indicus is recommended for nausea related to motion, dizziness, or lack of sleep. It is very beneficial for women who feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and find their symptoms worsen when they move or haven’t had enough rest.
How do I choose the right homeopathic remedy for my symptoms?
Homeopathy is an individualized medicine, so remedies are chosen based on your specific physical and emotional state. The post suggests gathering symptoms using a method like “CLAMS” to match your experience—such as whether you crave cold drinks (Phosphorus) or feel irritable and chilly (Arsenicum Album)—to the correct remedy.
What should I do if acute remedies don't fully resolve my nausea?
If specific acute remedies don’t work, you may need a constitutional remedy, which addresses the whole person. The author notes that her sister eventually found relief through her constitutional remedy (Nux Vomica) after acute dosing proved difficult. In such cases, it is best to reach out to a professional homeopath or an acute service for guidance.
