From Dreading My Period to Pain-Free Cycles – How Homeopathy Changed My Life

Growing up in the UK, there was no shortage of slang for periods — that time of the month, Aunt Flo, on the blob, rag week. In Australia, I even heard it called shark week! In fact, there are thousands of nicknames for menstruation. Yet, despite the creativity, many of us still avoid talking openly about it.

For some, a period is a monthly miracle, a womb blessing, or even part of a spiritual practice. Sadly, my own introduction to menstruation was far from positive.

A Painful Beginning

When my periods first started, the pain was unbearable. Each month I’d be doubled over, collapsed on the floor, and sometimes even vomiting from the cramps. This early experience shaped my view of womanhood — one filled with dread and discomfort.

I avoided physical activity, gave up sports, and even simple things like dancing became less appealing. The changes in my body — from my developing breasts to the monthly need for bulky pads — only added to my discomfort. Trying to hide leaks, squash myself into bras, and push through the pain while pretending nothing was wrong was exhausting.

Coping Through the Years

Eventually, I saw a doctor and was told I had dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation). Painkillers and a hot water bottle became my monthly routine. Sometimes, I’d miss school or work entirely. Other times, I’d try to carry on — even walking around London with a hot water bottle shoved down my jeans!

No matter how much I planned around it, my period seemed to arrive at the most inconvenient times — birthdays, holidays, graduations, even moving day.

Searching for a Natural Answer

By my early 20s, I was determined to avoid relying on painkillers or hormone treatments. I wanted a natural way to support my body. I began exploring herbal remedies, nutritional changes, and lifestyle tweaks.

Eating leafy greens in the lead-up to my period, making broccoli and spinach soup, and even chewing raw spinach on the first day helped reduce the intensity of my cramps — but the pain still forced me to rest at home every first day of bleeding.

The Homeopathy Turning Point

After 18 years of painful cycles, I was studying naturopathy when I had an assignment to visit a homeopath. During our session, they told me there were several remedies for menstrual pain and prescribed one to try at the onset of cramps.

The first remedy didn’t work — in fact, I felt worse. But when I returned and explained more about my symptoms, the homeopath gave me a different prescription.

The next month, I took it as soon as the cramps began. At first, the pain intensified, and I braced myself for another day in bed. Then, about half an hour later, I felt something strange — a cool, bubbling sensation in my abdomen, despite the hot water bottle on my stomach. Within moments, the pain was completely gone. I could stand, move, and even go to college that day — something I’d never been able to do on the first day of my period.

Month after month, the results were the same. Gradually, I needed less of the remedy, until one day I realised — I no longer had period pain.

A New Direction in Life

That single change was so profound, I felt compelled to learn more. I shifted my studies from naturopathy to homeopathy and eventually became a qualified homeopath. I had experienced firsthand how powerful this gentle medicine could be.

What to Expect in a Homeopathic Consultation for Menstrual Pain

A homeopath will ask detailed questions — where the pain is located, how it feels, what makes it better or worse, whether it radiates, and how it affects you emotionally. They’ll also consider your overall health, hormonal patterns, and energy levels.

The goal isn’t to mask symptoms, but to stimulate your body’s natural healing ability — restoring balance (homoeostasis) so your cycles become healthier over time. For some, this means gradual improvement; for others, relief can come more quickly.

If you’ve been living with painful periods, know this: it doesn’t have to be your “normal.” Homeopathy offers a gentle, individualised approach that might just change your experience — as it did for me.

What is dysmenorrhoea?
Dysmenorrhoea is the medical term for painful menstruation. Symptoms often include severe cramping, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. For some, the pain is strong enough to interfere with daily activities, school, or work.
Can lifestyle changes help with painful periods?
Yes. Simple natural supports can make a difference, such as using a hot water bottle, drinking herbal teas, taking magnesium salt baths, eating leafy greens, and avoiding sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods. Rest and stress reduction are also important.
How can homeopathy help with menstrual pain?
Homeopathy looks at the whole person — physical symptoms, emotional state, and triggers. Remedies are prescribed individually to match your symptom picture, aiming to restore balance and support the body’s natural healing process, rather than just masking pain.
What should I expect in a homeopathic consultation for period pain?
A homeopath will ask detailed questions about the nature of your pain, what makes it better or worse, how it affects you emotionally, and your overall health history. From this, they choose a remedy tailored to you, with the aim of improving your cycles over time.
Can homeopathy bring lasting relief from period pain?
Yes. For some, improvements are gradual, while others experience quick relief. In many cases, once the right remedy is found, reliance on painkillers or other treatments may decrease, and cycles become more manageable or even pain-free.
