Boosting Immunity and Supporting Your Body Through Seasonal Changes

Looking after our health is important all year, but there’s something about the shift from summer into autumn and winter that makes it especially vital.

Sudden drops in temperature, unexpected rain, or getting caught in a chilly wind can leave us vulnerable. One day you’re fine — the next, you’ve got a streaming nose and feel like you’ve been run over.

For me, the first sign of feeling run down used to be a sore throat, while for others it might be a cough or even a chest infection. We’re all different, and this is exactly why homeopathy works so well — it’s tailored to the individual.

Homeopathy involves selecting a remedy that best matches your unique set of symptoms. When it comes to colds and flu, the aim isn’t to block the symptoms, but to help your body process and recover from them more effectively, often speeding up the healing process.

My Favourite Immune-Boosting and Preventative Supports

Before we dive into some commonly used homeopathic remedies for colds and flu, here are a few natural ways I love to strengthen the immune system year-round.

Vitamin C – A simple and delicious way to get your daily dose is to squeeze two fresh organic oranges for breakfast each morning. Drink it straight away, as vitamin C begins to break down quickly — and shop-bought juices often contain unwanted sugars.

Vitamin D – Known as the sunshine vitamin, it’s vital for immunity, bone health, and overall wellbeing. Those in the northern hemisphere often don’t get enough year-round, so a good quality liquid or spray supplement can help. While 400–800 IU is a general recommendation, some research suggests that 1,000–4,000 IU may be needed, depending on factors like age, location, and sun exposure.

Vitamin B12 – Essential for healthy red blood cells, DNA production, and brain function. It’s naturally found in animal products, so those on plant-based diets, older adults, and pregnant women should consider a good-quality supplement.

Omega-3s/Seaweed – Omega-3 fatty acids help support cell health and nutrient absorption. I like to collect seaweed in spring and summer, dry it in the sun, and use it year-round as a natural source.

Hydration – Many people underestimate just how important this is. Aim for 1.5–2 litres of water daily. Omega-3 oils can help soften cell walls, making it easier for your body to absorb water and nutrients.

Homeopathic Remedies to Keep on Hand in Autumn and Winter

Gelsemium – For colds or flu with muscle weakness, tiredness, and a heavy, sluggish feeling.

Bryonia – Suits those who want to be left alone in a quiet, dark room. They feel worse with movement and have very dry mucous membranes, plus an intense thirst.

Eupatorium Perfoliatum – Known for its “bone pain” — deep aches and soreness throughout the body, often with sneezing, cough, and eye discomfort.

Influenzinum – Used for general flu-like symptoms such as exhaustion, body stiffness, chills, and headaches.

Anas Barb/Oscillococcinum – Helpful for both prevention and early stages of seasonal colds and respiratory issues. Studies show it may reduce the onset of respiratory tract infections.

Jaborandi – For illnesses with unusual levels of sweating and salivation, plus possible chills, trembling, and bronchial irritation.

For most cases, a 30C potency is a good starting point, though having 200C on hand is useful for more intense symptoms.
