Alopecia Areata – A Homeopathic Case Study and Insights

Case Overview
A 42-year-old woman from Delhi visited my clinic with alopecia areata and tinnitus in her left ear. She was a homemaker, referred by another homeopath, and also reported scanty menstruation and vaginismus that had begun six months earlier.
During our consultation, she opened up about her emotional struggles. She felt unsupported and emotionally distant from her husband, unable to express herself openly. She believed he was no longer attracted to her. Being naturally introverted, she felt inferior to him and often avoided starting conversations with others. She admitted to crying when alone, without knowing the exact reason, and also experienced breast tenderness before her periods.
After reviewing her physical symptoms alongside her emotional state, I prescribed her initial remedies. Within four months, her alopecia had already shown visible improvement. The tinnitus had eased significantly in the first two months and now only appeared occasionally. Only two homeopathic remedies were used during this period, and her treatment is ongoing to address both physical and emotional aspects, ensuring the condition does not return.
In my 17 years of practice, I’ve successfully treated 10–12 alopecia areata cases, and each one is a unique learning experience. Over time, I’ve refined my approach to case-taking—now focusing more on listening carefully to the patient’s own account and gently guiding them to reveal their core experiences. This has led to deeper, longer-lasting healing, and I remain just as passionate about improving my work with each case.
Understanding Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that can lead to patchy or complete hair loss on the scalp and other areas of the body, such as eyebrows or eyelashes. It is non-scarring and inflammatory, and can affect people of all ages, sexes, and ethnicities.
Types of Alopecia Areata
- Alopecia areata focalis – Patchy hair loss on the scalp or body.
- Alopecia areata barbae – Hair loss confined to the beard.
- Alopecia areata totalis – Loss of all scalp hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes.
- Alopecia areata universalis – Loss of nearly all body hair.
- Alopecia maligna – Gradual, chronic hair loss, often resistant to treatment.
- Alopecia areata diffusa/reticularis – Diffuse thinning without defined bald spots.
Causes
- Genetic predisposition
- Other autoimmune conditions (thyroid disorders, Addison’s disease, vitiligo)
- Emotional stress or trauma
- Possible links to allergies, eczema, and asthma
Will My Hair Grow Back?
Hair regrowth varies greatly between individuals. In some cases, hair grows back and stays; in others, it may regrow and then fall again. Even in severe cases where all hair is lost, regrowth is still possible. Initially, the new hair may appear lighter in colour before returning to its normal shade and texture.
Homeopathic treatment offers promising results by encouraging healthy regrowth and addressing the underlying triggers—this case being a clear example.
Conventional Treatments
Commonly used medicines include:
- Corticosteroids
- Minoxidil (5%)
- Anthralin
- Sulfasalazine
- Oral cyclosporine
While they may produce temporary improvement, they do not always prevent new patches or address the root cause.
The Homeopathic Approach
Homeopathy looks beyond the symptom of hair loss, focusing instead on the person as a whole. This includes their physical complaints, emotional state, family history, and tendencies toward certain health conditions (known as miasmatic tendencies).
Two patients with alopecia may require completely different remedies depending on their overall health picture.
Remedies for Alopecia – My Clinical Reference
Below are examples from my own prescribing index:
- Patchy hair loss – Aloes, Arsenicum album, Calcarea carb
- After severe illness or childbirth – Carbo veg, China, Thallium, Natrum muriaticum
- With dandruff – Thuja
- With grey hair in bald patches – Vinca minor
- With emotional grief – Phosphoric acid, Staphysagria, Ignatia
- From scalp itching or suppressed eruptions – Graphites, Lycopodium, Silicea
External support can also help, such as rinsing with diluted Spiritus phosphoria or a mild saline solution over bald areas.
Alopecia is rarely a quick-fix condition. Effective treatment often takes 3–9 months and should be guided by a qualified homeopath to address the deeper causes and reduce the risk of recurrence.
