ADHD and Homeopathy – Supporting Children Naturally

ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, affects an estimated 6.1 million children between the ages of 2 and 17 in the United States. While adults can also be diagnosed, it’s more common in children — with boys (around 13%) more likely to be diagnosed than girls (around 6%)*.
ADHD impacts both how a child functions day-to-day and how they behave. It’s considered a brain-based condition, though some experts believe it’s also strongly linked to gut health. The gut-brain connection is far from a new idea — research increasingly shows that the trillions of bacteria living in our digestive system, known as the gut microbiome, have a major influence on mental well-being.
This gut microbiome, unique to each person, is part of the gut-brain axis — a communication network linking the gut, brain, nervous system, and other key systems in the body. Interestingly, studies suggest that children with ADHD have a different composition of gut bacteria compared to those without the condition*. This raises the question — could supporting the gut microbiome also benefit the brain and nervous system?
From my own experience in practice, I believe the answer is yes. Because homeopathy treats each person as an individual rather than focusing only on the diagnosis, we look closely at every child’s unique expression of ADHD. This means considering how they react emotionally, respond to their environment, manage sensory input, and even how their digestive health and microbiome might be playing a role.
Different Presentations of ADHD
ADHD doesn’t look the same in every child. The main types include:
- Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive – Children who constantly need to move, struggle to focus for long periods, and often seek variety to stay engaged.
- Predominantly inattentive – Children who are easily distracted, find it hard to sustain attention, and show little hyperactivity.
- Combined type – A mix of both hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive traits.
Children with ADHD may avoid or dislike activities requiring prolonged focus, have difficulty with everyday tasks like getting dressed, tying shoes, doing chores, or completing homework. They may express frustration through constant movement, talking excessively, interrupting others, tapping, or other repetitive behaviours.
Homeopathy – an individual approach
Because homeopathy is tailored to the person rather than the label, there’s a wide scope for supporting children with ADHD, ADD, or ODD. A homeopath works to match the remedy to the child’s specific patterns — helping address behavioural challenges naturally, without the side effects associated with some conventional treatments.
Remedies that may be considered
Lycopodium – Often suited to children who appear well-behaved in public but are irritable or defiant at home. They may struggle with self-confidence, have difficulty concentrating, and display bursts of anger, especially towards younger siblings. These children can be indecisive, slow to grasp new ideas, and sensitive yet quick to irritate.
Gelsemium – Helpful for children whose poor concentration stems from mental and physical fatigue. They may seem dull, drowsy, or easily distracted, sometimes suffering from trembling anxiety, particularly before tests or performances.
Baryta Carbonica – Indicated for children with delayed physical or mental development. They may be shy, clingy, and resistant to change, often needing reassurance and support. Forgetfulness, nail-biting, and difficulty engaging in play can also be key indicators.
While there are more than a hundred potential remedies for ADHD, working with an experienced homeopath can help find the one that best suits your child’s needs — supporting them in a safe, natural way.
