A Journey Through Severe Eczema and the Path to True Healing

Over ten years ago, I finally received the long-awaited referral to the renowned Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London. At just three months old, my daughter was wrapped from head to toe in a tight, double-layered body suit—something you might expect to see on a severe burns patient, or perhaps someone with intense radiation damage.
When eczema reaches such an extreme level, it goes far beyond the persistent itching most associate with the condition. On a newborn’s tiny body, the skin was not only inflamed but open, weeping, and dangerously exposed. Like many parents of children with chronic eczema, I worked my way through countless creams, ointments, dietary changes, and laundry products, desperately searching for the cause. Each attempt brought a small flicker of hope, but after three months of worsening symptoms, I was ready to try anything that might bring relief. Finally, we were about to see one of the world’s leading specialists—surely they would have the answer.
Yet eczema, as many know, is rarely solved with a single solution.
The Conventional Approach: Suppressing the Problem
In mainstream medicine, the primary treatment for eczema is corticosteroids—potent drugs that suppress inflammation and, in many cases, deliver dramatic short-term results. In my daughter’s case, the improvement was almost instant. However, these drugs don’t come without a cost. Aside from potential side effects, the deeper concern lies in their suppressive action on the body as a whole.
Conventional medicine often approaches illness from a reductionist viewpoint, treating the skin in isolation rather than considering the wider picture. Eczema, from this perspective, is simply a skin issue to be controlled. By suppressing the outward signs, the problem appears “managed”—but it is not cured.
A Holistic Perspective: Seeing the Whole Picture
From a holistic standpoint, eczema is not just about the skin. Instead, it is seen as a reflection of the body’s attempt to protect its more vital organs by using the skin as a safe outlet for toxins. If the body’s primary elimination systems—such as the lymphatic or digestive system—are struggling, the skin becomes the secondary channel.
The word “eczema” itself means “to boil over” or “to throw out,” illustrating this process of expelling what the body does not want to keep inside. When we forcefully block this natural process, the toxins don’t disappear—they are simply driven deeper into the system, where they can cause more serious issues.
One well-known example is the link between suppressed eczema and the later development of asthma. Some researchers have pinpointed a protein, thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), as a possible connection. True to the reductionist model, the proposed solution is to develop a drug that blocks this protein. But this approach risks ignoring the broader consequences of disrupting the body’s natural functions.
What I Saw in My Own Child
This wasn’t just theory—I watched it unfold before my eyes. As my daughter’s eczema faded under steroid treatment, other problems appeared. Her digestion became increasingly fragile, affecting not only her stomach but her liver, pancreas, gallbladder, and spleen. Her face, hands, and body often looked puffy. She bruised easily, her mood was unsettled, and she seemed constantly uncomfortable. The eczema was mostly gone, but she was far from healthy.
I realised that continuing down this path meant an endless cycle of medications—one drug to control the symptoms, another to handle the side effects, and so on. I didn’t want that future for her.
Turning Towards Homeopathy
Initially, I had dismissed homeopathy as unlikely to make any real difference. Those small, sugar-like pills seemed far too simple to deal with something so entrenched. But eventually, I decided it was worth a try.
What followed was nothing short of remarkable. The healing process wasn’t overnight—it unfolded gradually, layer by layer—but I witnessed a profound shift in her overall health. Her eczema cleared completely, but more importantly, her digestive, hormonal, and nervous systems came into balance.
And beyond the physical improvements, something else bloomed—her creativity and joy for life seemed to awaken.
This experience didn’t just transform my daughter’s health; it reshaped my own path. Like many homeopaths, my journey into the profession began with a deeply personal experience of healing.
